After certainly isn’t the first or last fanfiction to go from the web, to traditional publishing, to a movie adaptation \u2014 think of 50 Shades of Grey, which was based on Twilight, or The Love Hypothesis, which came from Star Wars. The story was originally fanfiction based on the band One Direction published on the site Wattpad. It doesn’t just begin with the publication of the source novels, the first of which was released in 2014, but it also existed in a previous form. There, she meets the rebellious and mysterious Hardin Scott during a game of truth or dare at a party. Her high school sweetheart, Noah, helps her move into her college dorm.<\/p>\n

“After Ever Happy” finds Tessa and Hardin in a relatively solid place, with both accepting that everything they’ve faced has only strengthened their relationship, but they end up splitting before the current final installment “After Everything.” That movie, however, ends with them together, in case you were concerned. The “After” film franchise centers around star-crossed lovers Tessa Young and Hardin Scott \u2014 played by Josephine Langford (“Moxie”) and Hero Fiennes Tiffin (“The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare”) \u2014 who meet during their first year at an unnamed and obviously fictional college. In any case, the titles of the “After” movies aren’t going to do you any favors if you’re trying to figure out the right order in which to consume them. Knowing that the “After” series is about a very real person, though, might feel a little strange when you sit down to read or watch the stories.<\/p>\n
Will The Cast Return In After: Next Generation?<\/h2>\n
“After” kicks off while Hardin and Tessa attend college; she ultimately parts ways with Noah after he realizes she’s sleeping with Hardin, but the second film, “After We Collided,” moves the duo out of college and into their professional lives in Seattle, Washington. Tessa has been a well-behaved girl all her life, but when she meets Hardin, he unlocks a more dangerous side of her; she ends up cheating on her high school boyfriend Noah (Dylan Arnold), who she was still dating when she and Harwin first hooked up, and she’s horrified to discover some of his personal struggles. Everything seems smooth sailing until Hardin takes Tessa to London for his mother\u2019s wedding. Hardin, originally reluctant about Tessa meeting her father for fear of getting hurt, finds himself bonding with the man as they bond about their alcoholism.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, you have to have a high tolerance for repetition as almost the entire plot follows the same pattern of Tessa and Hardin are happy for a day, he gets angry and they fight, they spend time apart, and they make up. On the one hand, it makes for great entertainment; whether you’re watching for the romance or to have a laugh, everything is hammed up to 1000. It’s here that the series really starts to lean into its roots, which has positives and negatives. Once she arrives, she meets Hardin (played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin), a friend of her roommate and a textbook bad boy, and the pair begin their tumultuous relationship.<\/p>\n
Future (<\/h2>\n
While it isn’t as obvious in the first movie, Tessa is seen going back to Hardin by way of the lake he shows her after reading an essay he submitted for their shared English class. He picks up Wuthering Heights and remembers their moment in his dorm all those weeks ago. In the days they spend apart, Hardin mulls things over in his dorm room, blasting music and emotionally recounting the days he spent with Tessa.<\/p>\n
Todd, who once wrote under the username Imaginator1D on the fanfiction site Wattpad, penned “After” as a story about a regular girl who ends up in a torrid, steamy romance with Harry Styles (the Grammy-winning musician who got his start in the boy band One Direction, which Todd’s username is pretty clearly referencing.) Fanfiction making the leap into legitimate literary territory isn’t anything new; “Fifty Shades of Grey” began its life as a work of “Twilight” fanfiction, a fact that I cannot ever possibly unlearn. As his journey progresses, Hardin once again crosses paths with Tessa, but only time will tell if the former couple will rekindle their flame. As they cross with each other again in the future, they have the opportunity to rekindle their relationship or repeat their same old mistakes again. Hardin is furious at the idea, but eventually, they part ways and spend time figuring out what they truly want in life.<\/p>\n
He helps her into the lake and they proceed to have fun before having a meaningful conversation about life and what they enjoy. He takes her to a lake tucked in the woods, explaining that this is his “secret place”. She tries to keep her distance from Hardin and spends some time with Steph and Jace. Tessa stops herself before anything happens and promptly leaves the party.<\/p>\n
When they returned home they consummated their relationship. They shared a dance and had a good night despite the tension between Hardin and his father, Ken Scott. Their public displays of affection make Hardin’s friends, specifically Molly and Zed, suspicious as they follow the couple around. He initially claimed the apartment belonged to a friend of his father’s, but later admitted that he wants them to live there together.<\/p>\n
So there’s a lot of little things in the mix, and we’re just waiting for the right moment and right time and the right cast and all the things to come together.” “We are working on some other versions. There’s the series ‘Before.’ There’s the Landon series (Nothing More and Nothing Less). So we have a few things in the mix. While it marks the end of the current story arc, a prequel following a young Hardin and a sequel following Tessa and Hardin’s children are in the works. That’s another reason to watch these movies in order \u2014 besides Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, there’s a lot of re-casting that would probably be very confusing if you didn’t follow the order. “After We Fell” puts more obstacles in the couple’s way when Tessa’s estranged father Richard (Atanas Srebrev) comes back into her life and when they learn that Christian Vance, now played by “True Blood” alum Stephen Moyer. With that said, the “After” series doesn’t exactly make it easy for newcomers, because the titles don’t indicate anything about what happens in the movies, nor do they reference the correct order. For the uninitiated, the “After” film series is based on author Anna Todd’s book series of the same name \u2014 and the backstory here is actually pretty wild. Do you want to watch the “After” movies but you’re not quite sure where to logistically begin?<\/p>\n
Tessa sits with Tristan and Steph, where she is introduced to the rest of their group, including Hardin Scott, the boy she met in her dorm room days earlier. The girls bond as Steph helps Tessa pick out an outfit for the party, even though the red dress doesn’t quite please her but they agree to compromise. Steph quickly invites Tessa out to the party that night but she declines her offer despite the boy’s sarcastic comments about her not being the party type. He dismisses her claims and holds up a set of keys to her dorm. The girls seem to get along and Tessa settles into her dorm by spending the night there alone.
